Where's Doc & Marty?

The CBS Early Show is having a theme week that is covering each decade and every day they've had a different era of cars parked outside. Today the 80s were being represented by a line of DeLoreans! None of them looked like they were customized to fly though! ;)

Interviews

A couple links to share....

My friend, Melissa, in SoCal was recently quoted in an article about how Vegetarians can adapt their diets while pregnant - http://www.parentingoc.com/feature_0811_3.html

And my mom now has a profile posted as a book reviewer on the Lincoln Public Libraries site. The Q&A even enlightened me on a few things I didn't know about her! - http://www.lincolnlibraries.org/depts/bookguide/profiles/kv-profile.htm

History in the Making

Today is the day...FINALLY! After 2 plus years of campaigning the election most Americans and much of the world has been waiting for is here!

Since I saw Rockefeller Center yesterday I decided to head to Times Square today to see how other news outlets were covering the event.

About the time I got to the Toys R Us area, I heard, "Obama Condoms! Get your Obama Condoms here! If you use them the Giants will play better!" Wha-huh?! I continued on to the ABC studios.

ABC was still setting up so I decided to cross over and see if the MTV studios were doing anything as "Rock the Vote" had a booth set up near The Early Show this morning. On my way there I heard another guy announcing that he not only had Obama Condoms but McCain and Palin Condoms, too! How much were they selling those for? And were they actually selling?! I saw a tourist taking a picture of the box on his cell. Something tells me more pics were taking than condoms bought but I could be wrong....

MTV studios had nothing but CNN had set up a big screen and was handing out free pretzels, popcorn and coffee to those that were using the new TKTS stairs to watch the latest election coverage. I crossed over to inspect further and saw they were also making buttons for people to wear. They had 2 templates available. One said - "I'm Pro (blank) and the other said (Blank) for President. I stood in line to get mine made - I'm Pro America. I know that may be cheesy but honestly, I just hope that whoever gets elected just leaves the office in 4 years in better shape than they got it. I would hope that's what most Americans want when it comes down to it, whether "their candidate" got in or not. Only time will tell on that one though...hoping for the best.

The guys putting the buttons together were down to one button maker as the other one kept jamming. I asked one of them how long they'd been there. He said that he'd been there since 6am and after clean up he guessed they wouldn't be leaving until 2am. He was hoping it wouldn't rain. So far so good...

After I got my button, I headed for the Fox News Studios. They had their main stage set up but were in the process of setting up an area for those that wanted to watch updates.

As I headed back to work I noticed a table set up w/food and knew their must be filming in the area. I heard a guy stop a member of the crew and heard him say they were filming a new series. I continued on and me and other pedestrians ran right into the filming area. We were told to clear out and I noticed Bobby Cannavale standing there and also noticed well coiffed blond hair on someone standing near him.

I looked it up on imdb and discovered they are remaking "Cupid" which was one of my fav tv series (it had Jeremy Piven before Entourage fame) that didn't last nearly long enough. The blond was Sarah Paulson. Not sure how excited I am about the "redo" but won't be able to tell until I see it! I guess it is going to be a mid-season replacement.

Oh yeah...back to the election! ;)

After work I went past Fox again and they had free pretzels, popcorn, coffee, soda and bottled water. They also had an area where you could pose w/Fox New Anchor cardboard cutouts and they'd post the pics online - I went to investigate further and was handed a flyer that said they were on Facebook. I opted not to do the pic thing - however I did get some popcorn! ;)

Now to wait for the results and wonder how much time will be allowed to pass before campaigning begins for 2012.

Halloween!

There was no costume for me this year (our office really doesn't do that sort of thing) but I did wear my candy corn earrings and Boo! T-shirt.

When I got off the subway I saw a sign posted that Pink was performing on The Early Show and saw the set up when I went past, however she wasn't out there yet. I did see the Weatherman surrounded by various costumed people as he reported as well as fancy jack-o-lanterns carved out w/ the hosts' likenesses. And then I noticed the breakfast truck and although I normally scoot past (as the free breakfast is intended for The Early Show audience) I decided to stop today and got a free coffee and Krispy Kreme donut shaped like a pumpkin and frosted like a Jack O Lantern. :)
I still had time before I had to get to work so I walked over to the Today show (cutting thru Rockefeller center where I saw their harvest display) and could hear them (playing a fairytale variation of Family Feud) but could only see the tops of their costumes - someone was dressed as Humpty Dumpty. I tried to venture in closer to get a pic but was going to be stopped so they could check my bag. Eh. I decided that was too much hassle just to get a pic so I moved on. They didn't have free breakfast, either! ;)

Post work, I headed to the Sunshine Theater to see "My Name Is Bruce" w/Bruce Campbell himself introducing the movie and coming back for a Q&A after.

There were 3 guys dressed up as Ash in the audience and Bruce had the best one come down to chat w/ him. Bruce said he wanted to give the guy some money and asked how much was spent on the costume. The guy guessed about $100. Bruce said - Here's $5.

Then Bruce got a shirt from a fan that said - Bruce Campbell '08 w/ a Chainsaw on it. She then asked if she could touch his scar. He let her, but not w/out comment and then he gave her $2 for the t-shirt.

Bruce then pointed out that Sarah Berry from Evil Dead II was in the audience and said that she had to stand up and scream otherwise no one would recognize her (for some reason that pic is darker so when I tried to lighten on my computer it went to b&w!) The lights went down and Berry and her partner (not sure if he was a friend, bf, hubby or what) headed up the stairs to find a less close seat and ended up sitting right beside me!

The movie is very much "for the fans" as Bruce stated before it started. Many of the jokes would probably go over the head of those that have never seen a Bruce Campbell movie before...although, if they haven't...I'm not sure why they'd be watching this movie!

After the movie, Bruce came out again and someone asked him about the actors - to be honest, some weren't that good - but Bruce noticed the undertone of the person asking the question and tried to defend by saying he got them from the Oregon area Shakespeare Festival and that @ the very least the lead female had a little something goin' on, right?!

Most of "Bruce" was filmed on Campbell's property - which he repeatedly said he wouldn't divulge where in Oregon that was.

A fan also asked if the jeans he was wearing were the same in the movie...yes, in fact they were!

He said that Ted Raimi is the Clint Howard of his movies. (Ted appears as several characters w/ several accents in "Bruce".)

He also corrected a fan when they said he made a "cameo" in Spiderman saying that in the first one he named Spiderman, the 2nd one he was the only one to defeat Spiderman (snooty usher) and the 3rd one he was the only one Spiderman has ever asked for help. So this was much more than just cameo appearances.

Had I wanted to, I probably could have asked to go backstage to see Bruce after as the friend of Berry was fairly friendly and I also went out the stairwell Bruce was on so I could have just gone down there but thought I'd leave well enough alone. I've met him once and I really don't know what I would have said to him anyway! ;)

So from 2nd & 2nd I headed down 2nd to meet my friend @ a restaurant she works at in the 30s and all along the way I checked out the various Halloween costumes and wished I had on those camera glasses to record it all. The most creative are indeed the ones that aren't bought @ a store.

After meeting up w/ my friend we headed home and saw even more costumes (including contestants for "Price Is Right" complete w/ their bidding stands) and my friend had a guy come up from behind her and put a small carved pumpkin in her face and say "Boo!" and then kept running to the next group to do the same thing. The guy's friend was behind us and I asked if he did that to everyone and instead of answering the guy just started running to catch up w/ his friend. Weird.

Coming Up Next....

So, due to the stars aligning just right I managed to find myself w/ a sizeable role for a full length play w/in an interactive play that opens in December. And I'm currently trying very hard to buckle down and get my lines memorized so I'm off book sooner than later!

I am playing "Diane", the leader of an all female theater group that is putting on a trial play in which the audience can vote to overrule or sustain and the play skips or continues to progress accordingly.

A lot of work is ahead but I'm excited to be a part of this production and if you're in the area - come see it! :)

Here are more details from the email blast...

THE ANASTASIA TRIALS IN THE COURT OF WOMEN
Genre: Comedy

by Carolyn Gage

The Emma Goldman Theatre Brigade, a radical feminist theatre group, is at it again - implementing their innovative lottery system to insure theatrical equality. They each draw the role they will play out of a hat each night before the show, but tonight there's a critic in the audience and t he sisterhood is put to the test when some of them don't draw the role they want. What follows is the trial of five women accused of denying Anastasia Romanov, the infamous daughter of Tsar Nicholas, of her identity where the audience becomes judge and jury. They rule on objections during the course of the play, creating a new show with every performance. A courtroom drama based on history wrapped in a backstage farce with a healthy dose of audience participation thrown in for good measure, The Anastasia Trials in the Court of Women presents a profoundly engaging excursion into the interactions of women who are survivors and abusers.

Goodbye, Shea

Tonight a friend and I said goodbye to Shea Stadium (we'd visited Yankees Stadium earlier in the season) as the new Citi Stadium peered down on us. Boo.

Fall was definitely in the air as the Mets played the Cubs and although the game got off to a hopeful start - Delgado had a Grand Slam! Woot! - it ended in a heartbreaker (for Mets fans) in overtime. Mets lost 6-9. Admittedly we left around the 8th inning - the crowd was getting rowdy as a lot of Cubs fans were present and well, I'm still sick and the cooler air wasn't doing me any favors, either. Lame...I know!

You can check out these pics via Snapfish for more details on the evening....

@ the Premiere of Nights in Rodanthe

Thanks to Film Metro I got a voucher to exchange for a ticket to the premiere of Nights in Rodanthe. That's right, not a preview but a PREMIERE! Having never been a part of such an event I wasn't sure how crazy long the line would be so I sped over (on foot) to the Ziegfeld Theater after work and the line wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. After standing in line for less than 20 minutes I got my ticket and was in the theater by 6pm! (The movie was scheduled to start @ 7pm.)

Security directed ticket holders where to go - but oddly didn't search any bags. When we got to the screening floor, the lobby had tables full of bags of popcorn, ice bins full of bottled water and the counters were full of cups of soda. ALL FREE!!! :)

After grabbing my popcorn and bottled water (and some napkins - just in case...) I entered the theater. I'd never been inside the Ziegfeld before and what a grand theater it is! I soon discovered that my ticket actually had an assigned seat on it. I was on the aisle - 101, Row Y.

As I settled in, I started to notice a lot of people w/ their cameras out. Dang! I had left mine @ home because the voucher had said no recording devices and since my camera can record video segments I didn't want to risk confiscation. The lady behind me commented on other's w/ their cameras, too and said she left hers behind because when she went to another premiere (Journey to the Center of the Earth - she said that Brendan Fraser was there but they didn't actually show the movie, just clips!) security told her friend that they'd have to take the camera or the friend would have to go home. Stink. How are you supposed to know?!

Viola Davis, seemed to be the first cast member there and she entered and found a seat in the center. So is that where the others would sit, too?!

As it got closer to the start a quintet of middle-aged, bold and brassy ladies needed to scoot past me to sit and then 1 proceeded to spend the remaining minutes before the movie going in and out of the row - telling me not to hate her - as she got pics w/ whoever she saw. The lady behind me made a comment to her about the camera and the busybody said she ALWAYS brings her camera and said how she went to a premiere w/ Will Smith and got a pic taken w/ him after waiting and waiting but that he was very nice.

During all this we saw Richard Gere's wife, Carey Lowell, enter the aisle ahead of me and soon realized that Gere would be sitting in that aisle, too!

Ice-T settled in w/ his wife (?) 2 rows behind me. Christopher Meloni joked around w/ Ice-T but Meloni did not look thrilled when someone asked to take his pic. He ended up 3 rows behind me. Apparently some guy from a Bachelor show was sitting near us, too. Never did get my eyes on Diane Lane but right before the lights went down Richard Gere entered and the camera flashes nearly blinded me as they started to dim the lights. I can understand why the stars don't like the paparazzi flashing @ them while they are driving - @ night especially!

The movie started and as various credits showed, certain parts of the audience sent up cheers. And then the lone man w/ the quintet (and apparent hubby of busybody) began his 5-10 minute ritual of pulling out his blackberry to check it and annoy me w/ it's glow. Kept hoping one of the many ushers would catch him and say something...but no.

The movie was shorter than I expected and since I hadn't read the book I had no expectations but admittedly probably would not have spent money on seeing it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't spectacular either. It was okay - more due to the storyline than the acting tho. Not sure if it would be considered a date movie...maybe more of a chick flick I guess...?

Once the movie was over we were directed back out again and they were announcing that After Party Buses were on the left. Ummm....was that for anybody?! I didn't stop to investigate as my bladder was being strained and I needed to get home! (I had thought there'd be a spot to stop in the lobby but the way they moved us out I learned I should have found one on the same floor as the screening - doh!)

So, as I exited to the right, I saw cameras poised and ready to snap the celebs as they exited. Absolutely surreal to think that I can look at pics from this event and say that I was there!

Hopefully I can do this again - and find out about that bus! ;)

Doughnut Bribe

As I'm walking to work this morning, I saw a truck covered w/ pics/logos promoting "Worst Week" parked near the sidewalk close to "The CBS Early Show". Upon further inspection I see a guy is holding a donut in a napkin out the window and others are announcing free doughnuts.

For Real?!

I double back and see that not only are they free but they are also Krispy Kreme!

As I took the doughnut, the trio of promoters briefly bombarded me w/ reminders to watch "Worst Week" tonight.

Ummm...I didn't tell them I'd be doing laundry instead. But I did thank them for the doughnut! :)

What a great way to start a Monday!

AotA Opening Weekend

So by the time "Adam of the Apes" was ready to open I had managed to get sick (sinus/cough - general phlegmy loveliness) but preferred it be me than members of the cast (some had already been suffering w/ yucks during rehearsal). Still it totally left me wiped and on edge for the opening and there was still some tweaking to do as the actors got more comfy w/ their roles and running the show in its entirety. Sigh.

That all aside though this group of actors certainly work their tails off every night! Most of the characters are very physically demanding and keeping the energy and pacing up for 2hrs is no easy feat. I asked a lot of them but I wouldn't have if I didn't think they could do it - It's a talented group!

We were reviewed on Sunday and you can read it here.

2 more weeks to go! I'll only see it once next week but am excited to see how the cast continues to settle into their roles. And hopefully I will have shook this cold by then, too! ;)

Directing Chimps!

Here are details on the new full length comedy I'm directing. And here is a link to press photos.

Only 5 more rehearsals 'til preview night!!!!!

ADAM OF THE APES

Genre: Comedy
Written by Oliver Thrun. Directed by Nora Vetter
The story of the Dawn of Man undergoes some comical revisions in "Adam of the Apes" when human twins are born into a community of chimpanzees. This farcical satire--which isn't for the kiddies--takes on topical debates such as Creationism, Evolution, and Women's Lib while the twins, Adam & Eve, grow up in a chimp society and actually introduce thinking into the previously "thought-less" rainforest.

Originally written at The Crucible for American Theater Workshop and making its Off-Off-Broadway debut at The Theater for the New City, "Adam of the Apes" is sure to leave audiences laughing in spite of themselves, with much to discuss and debate after the show.
